I was a newbie, so I never knew Crypto guys were so cruel.
When I first started getting into crypto, I was excited about everything. Airdrops, points, new projects, wallets, communities… everything looked like an opportunity to make some money.
I honestly thought I was learning the game.
One day, I connected my Phantom wallet to an airdrop site because I wanted to claim my points. The name of the project was Virtual Protocol.
I never knew it was a fake site.
At that time, I didn't really understand how these scams worked. I just saw the website, connected my wallet and did what I thought I was supposed to do. Nothing happened immediately, so I didn't suspect anything.
I went on with my normal life.
About two days later, I logged into my wallet and got a pop-up asking me to sign a transaction.
I wasn't very careful.
I never thought in the direction that my wallet could have been compromised. I just assumed it was probably related to the airdrop I had claimed.
In my mind, I was thinking, "Maybe this is the transaction I need to sign before I get rewarded."
So I signed it.
That was my mistake.
I refreshed my wallet balance.
$0.
I refreshed again.
Still $0.
At first, I thought it was probably a network issue. Maybe Phantom was having problems displaying my balance. So I kept refreshing, hoping the money would come back.
But after checking properly, I realised my $30 was gone.
Completely gone.
I checked the transaction history and found out that the money had been transferred to an unknown wallet.
My heart sank.
That $30 might not sound like a lot of money to some people, but it was a lot to me.
That was literally my salary for a job I did that month.
Imagine working for an entire month and the little money you finally receive disappears because you clicked something you thought was legitimate.
It was so painful 😖.
I blamed myself because I felt like I should have known better. I kept asking myself why I didn't check the website properly, why I signed the transaction without thinking twice, and why I trusted something I didn't fully understand.
But the truth is, I was a newbie.
I didn't know that connecting your wallet to the wrong website could put you at risk. I didn't understand what I was actually signing. I just saw an airdrop and wanted to claim my points.
And that experience taught me a very painful lesson.
In crypto, not everyone is your friend.
Some people are literally waiting for you to make one mistake.
They don't care if you're new. They don't care if it's your last $30. They don't care how hard you worked for it.
If they get access to your funds, they will take it.
And the painful part is that losing the money wasn't even the only thing that hurt.
It was the feeling of knowing that I had done it to myself without even realising what I was doing.
I had trusted a website.
I had signed a transaction.
And just like that, my money was gone.
That was one of the first times I truly understood that in crypto, you have to be extremely careful.
Don't connect your wallet to random websites just because you're trying to claim an airdrop.
Don't sign transactions you don't understand.
Don't assume that because a project looks popular, the website you're using is legitimate.
And most importantly, don't rush because you're afraid of missing out.
That $30 taught me a lesson I will never forget.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the last time I got scammed.
I got scammed multiple times after that.
But every experience made me more careful and taught me something new.
I wish I had learned these lessons without losing my money.
But that's crypto for you.
Sometimes, the lesson comes after the loss.
