I remember the look on their faces.
They were like:
"What is blockchain technology?"
And honestly, I understood their confusion.
Blockchain is one of those words that can sound very complicated when you hear it for the first time.
If you start talking about distributed ledgers, decentralized networks, consensus mechanisms, cryptography and all those technical terms, you can easily lose someone who has never heard about the technology before.
So I knew I had to find a way to make it simple.
I didn't want to stand in front of the students and just bombard them with technical definitions.
I wanted them to understand what blockchain was and, more importantly, why people were talking about it.
Then I mentioned one word.
Bitcoin.
That changed the atmosphere a little.
The moment I mentioned Bitcoin, some of them became more interested.
Bitcoin was something they had heard about before.
Some had seen it on social media.
Some had heard people talk about it.
Some probably knew that Bitcoin was a digital currency, but they didn't really understand how it worked.
So I decided to use Bitcoin as the entry point.
I told them that instead of just talking about blockchain as an abstract technology, I wanted to show them how Bitcoin was created and how the technology behind it actually works.
That got their attention.
I started explaining Bitcoin mining.
I explained that Bitcoin doesn't work like the traditional banking system where a central institution simply controls the network.
Instead, there are miners who use computers to participate in securing the network and processing transactions.
I explained the idea of mining and how miners compete to find a block.
When a miner successfully finds a block, they receive a reward.
At this point, some of the students became even more curious.
They wanted to understand how someone could actually mine Bitcoin.
And this was where I had to explain something important.
I told them that the Bitcoin mining environment today is very different from what it was in the early days.
Today, it is practically impossible for an individual using an ordinary computer to compete effectively with the large mining operations that dominate the network.
Bitcoin mining has become highly competitive.
Large mining companies and mining farms operate huge numbers of specialized machines, consuming significant amounts of electricity and using infrastructure that an average person simply cannot compete with.
So if someone thinks they can just take their laptop, download Bitcoin mining software and start making serious Bitcoin from mining, that's not the reality anymore.
The students were surprised.
Some of them probably came into the class thinking that cryptocurrency was simply something you download and start making money from.
But I wanted them to understand that there is actual technology behind it.
There is infrastructure.
There are computers.
There are miners.
There are networks.
There are mathematical problems.
There are people and companies spending huge amounts of money to participate in these systems.
Then came another part that really got their attention.
I told them that Bitcoin is not the only cryptocurrency.
There are thousands of other cryptocurrencies outside Bitcoin.
I explained that these are generally referred to as altcoins, meaning cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin.
That statement alone got the classroom talking.
They were like:
"There are more than Bitcoin?"
Yes.
There are thousands of them.
And I decided to mention some examples.
I listed a few projects I could remember at the time.
Litecoin.
Vertcoin.
DigiByte.
NervaCurrency.
Zano_Project.
Veil_Project.
Reddcoin.
These were projects that I had encountered through my own experience in the cryptocurrency space.
For me, it was important that the students understood that the blockchain ecosystem is much bigger than just Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is probably the most well-known example, but there are many different blockchain projects that have been created with different goals, designs and approaches.
Some focus on payments.
Some focus on privacy.
Some focus on smart contracts.
Some focus on decentralization.
Some try to improve scalability.
Some are simply experiments.
This was where the lesson became more interesting because the students started asking questions.
And that is exactly what I wanted.
I wasn't trying to make them cryptocurrency traders.
I wasn't standing in front of them to tell them to go and buy Bitcoin.
That wasn't the purpose of the class.
I wanted them to understand the technology.
I wanted them to know that something like blockchain exists and that it is being used to create new types of networks and digital systems.
I wanted them to be exposed to something they might not necessarily learn from their regular school curriculum.
Because I believe education shouldn't only be about preparing students to pass examinations.
Students should also be exposed to new technologies.
They should know what is happening in the world.
They should understand the technologies that are changing different industries.
And blockchain is one of those technologies.
The funny thing is that when I first mentioned blockchain technology, the students didn't really know what I was talking about.
But once I mentioned Bitcoin, their ears opened.
That taught me something about teaching.
Sometimes, the problem isn't that people don't want to learn.
Sometimes, they just don't understand where the subject connects with something they already know.
Once I connected blockchain to Bitcoin, the conversation became easier.
Bitcoin gave them something they could relate to.
From there, I could explain mining.
From mining, I could explain how transactions are processed.
From there, I could introduce the idea of decentralized networks.
Then I could introduce other cryptocurrencies.
And before long, something that initially sounded very complicated started becoming something they could discuss.
That experience was interesting for me as well.
I have spent time learning about cryptocurrency and blockchain, but teaching it to senior secondary school students forced me to think about how to simplify what I knew.
You can't just use big grammar.
You have to make people understand.
You have to give examples.
You have to listen to their questions.
You have to know when they are confused.
And you have to be willing to explain the same thing in a different way.
That was one of the things I enjoyed about the experience.
Seeing the students go from:
"What is blockchain technology?"
to asking questions about Bitcoin mining and other cryptocurrencies was something I appreciated.
It reminded me that sometimes people only need the right introduction.
You don't know what a student may become interested in after learning something new.
One of those students might eventually become a blockchain developer.
Another might become a cybersecurity expert.
Another might become a researcher.
Another might go into fintech.
Another might build something completely different.
You never really know.
And that is one reason I believe technology education is important.
We are living in a world where technology is moving very fast.
Artificial intelligence is growing.
Blockchain is evolving.
Fintech is growing.
Digital assets are becoming part of conversations around the world.
And our young people should at least have the opportunity to understand what these things are.
Not necessarily so they can invest.
Not necessarily so they can trade.
But so they can understand the world they are growing into.
For me, teaching blockchain technology in a secondary school wasn't just another class.
It was an opportunity to introduce young minds to something they probably wouldn't have encountered otherwise.
I started with a word that sounded complex.
Blockchain.
They didn't understand it.
Then I mentioned another word.
Bitcoin.
Suddenly, I had their attention.
From Bitcoin, we talked about mining.
From mining, we talked about how difficult it has become for individual miners to compete with large mining farms.
Then I told them there are thousands of cryptocurrencies outside Bitcoin.
And that's when the classroom really became interested.
I mentioned a few examples:
Litecoin.
Vertcoin.
DigiByte.
NervaCurrency.
Zano.
For me, that was a small step.
But for those students, it could be the beginning of an entirely new area of knowledge.
And honestly, that's what teaching is about for me.
You may not know the impact of one lesson immediately.
You may not know what a student will remember five years from now.
But if you can introduce someone to an idea that changes the way they see the world, then you have done something meaningful.
I am glad I had the opportunity to teach blockchain technology to those students.
Because sometimes, the best way to build the future is to start by teaching the next generation what is possible.
